Plan

I chose the 1st design of the images because it was more appropriate for the WIX website design. The second design didn't have enough room to add explanation with the YouTube video. Also, the YouTube video isn't in a high resolution so the video quality becomes poor when its spread sideways. The 1st design had enough room to add paragraphs of text and extra space to add images. On WIX, the photos can be put in a cover flow view, so it is easier for the user to access the images. With the first design, it was possible to add 8 pictures on the first page and even more images on the second page. The YouTube video was short, and it didn't to be a widescreen video.

Design

These are the designs I drew.

This design above is following the wix template and adding images and videos. The textboxes are modified to fit the text on the website.

Design 2

This is similar to the 1st design, but the youtube takes up most of the first page. This is not designed by the wix template. The colors in this design are: blue, black, green, black and white. It has some flash content that can be modified later on. The discription on the side is narrow, so it can cover up more space.

Choice of Topic

I chose climate change and global warming as my topic because this is one of the larges issues that are going on in the world today.

Investigation

Problem- How do I effectively communicate online One Global Issues that is facing the world today?

keywords/ phrases- online, communicate, global issues, world, web 2.0 apps

research the problem- use some web 2.0 tools to make a website containing information about the issues for the people to look at (WIX app), also use communication tools (YouTube) to put own videos about the issues onto the website that was created.

Design Brief
By using WIX, anyone can create flash websites simply using the drag&drop features built in onto the website. You can also put your own audio and video recordings onto the websites and you tube videos from the net. this can help people learn more about the issues through the websites created by using WIX. If there are many views of the website I created, I would know that the message about the issues have been sent to other people in the world.

style used on other websites about climate change
color- green, blue, brown (colors of the earth)
styles- simple, some with flash content
media- pictures of impacts, few videos about how to solve climate change

find wix at www.wix.com

10 environmental issuses

1. Climate change

Climate change was called "global warming" because the climate was rising. now it is considered as climate change because for last year, the summer was hotter but the winter was very cold compared to the other past years. This is because of the pollutants given out by people and natural disasters. When a volcano erupts, a lot of carbon dioxide, dust and soot is released. But, many harmful gasses come from factories that people operate.

2. Ecosystem losses

Every year, the number of trees and forest areas decrease by a large amount. This is because of the people have to make space to live to support the increasing population, to produce paper, wooden products. These are all because of people's needs to support their lives. The large companies have a greed to make money and people want these products so the ones in developed countries can afford to pay a large amount for their needs. Because of decreasing forest areas the animals that used to live in those areas have no where else to go and head towards extinction.

3.Water deflects

Because of pollution, increasing population, there is less clean water for people to drink. In developed countries, the water systems have the technology to clean dirty water into clean, drinkable water. In the world, most of the water is salty ocean water that needs cleaning. In undeveloped countries, many people think that it is OK to drink polluted water if it's heated but isn't true.

4. Poverty

Poverty is a big issue in the world today. In fact, most of the people in the world don't have enough food to eat and die of starvation. Even if they have rice, they can only afford for one meal a day and just rice isn't a good source of minerals and other nutrients. Even many small children in poor areas die after few weeks after birth. Many donations can be made from developed countries to solve this problem.

5. Education for all

In developing countries, people might have the money but don't know how to spend it on education. Even there are schools in some countries but the government doesn't have enough money to pay teachers and school supplies. The schools can't have many children because of limited resources so many children have a dream of going to school.

6.Diseases

In forests and undeveloped areas, diseases are a big problem because of growing bacteria and low hygiene. Doctors aren't educated so they only know the old ways of treating diseases but many people still don't get better. The countries don't have education to create effective medicines, and there aren't enough people to study about medics. The richer people in developing countries usually move to developed countries to make more money.

7. natural disaster prevention

Developed countries have the technology to change the environment when a natural disaster occurs. For example, when water levels rise people just have to push a button to activate dams, and also generate electricity at the same time. But in many poor countries, the government doesn't pay for drainage and for protecting the citizens of rural areas. There is a higher chance of getting affected in those areas.

8.Digital divide

It is a true statement that only about 370 million people have access to the Internet in the world, out of more than 6 billion people. Only the richest people in the world can afford to buy computers and the Internet connection from their homes. When the radio systems stop, the people have no way of getting information from the developed countries.

9. Biotechnology rules

Biotechnology is a new division in science that started to appear few years ago. Now, people are starting to have experiments on larger animals for use on humans, instead of using mice. It is true that pigs have many similar things in common with people but they just treat the animals as an apparatus for experiments. This can lead to conflict against animal rights.

10. Illegal Drugs

Illegal drug trade has increased over few years even the security has improved. The people in black markets make a lot of money, because of even one gram of illegal drugs costs a lot of money. Scanners and dogs in airports can still prevent drugs from entering the country but there are probably hidden drug farms in rural areas. The countries have to have complete control on the farms with data.

Investigationg guiding questions

A. How can I make use of established and emerging WWW tools to support online publication?
To support online publication, people can use emerging WWWtools. Using topix lets you get local online news to support publication for news articles for an online newspaper. To create an online newspaper, people can use an app called thy news which is also a web 2.0 tool.
the link for many web 2.0 tools is www.go2web20.net.

B. What are the best tools to use for effective communication online?

I can make use of tools to communicate online by using many types of web 2.0 tools. For example, using facebook (http://www.facebook.com/) lets you to access many other people in the world easily to get ideas for your publication by messaging with other people. To communicate, people can also use Skype (http://www.skype.com/) using a microphone and a webcam to talk to other people by "calling" them from your computer. This application is easy to use and download and the only thing you will need to get started is a skype account that you can create one easily from Skype. By using You tube (http://www.youtube.com/) people can broadcast themselves by posting their videos on the web, that anyone can access to from youtube.com.

C. How can the Internet be used to help a community solve a environmental issue?
The internet can be used to help solve an environmental issue by informing many people about the issues. RSS feeds can do this by letting people read short passeges about the environmental issues. To do this, people can use FeedMingle to create original RSS feeds. This application can also create HTML widgets to be copied onto your own websites or blogs. Websites about the environment can also help people inform about the issues.

Design Cycle

The MYP design cycle is used to solve any problem using technology. It is constructed by 4 major parts that are: Investigate, Plan, Create, and evaluate. There are 2 or 3 smaller parts in each of the major parts. In investigating, a person first has to Identify the problem, develop the design brief and formulating the design specification. the design brief is how to solve the problem, and the design specification is how the final design will look like and the components the product would need to have.
